Each murder packs its own punch because the idea of what the victim went through is much more powerful. The audience is never shown any of the murders, only the gruesome crime scenes. While the script could've easily called for extreme violence and gratuitous gore, Fincher leaves a lot of the horror up to the imagination. ![]() It follows detectives William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) and David Mills (Brad Pitt) as they hunt a truly twisted serial killer, John Doe ( Kevin Spacey), whose grisly murders are based on the seven deadly sins. Jodie Foster and Kristen Stewart in "Panic Room." "Mank" is definitely worth a watch, but it's very self-indulgent, though that is somewhat understandable since Fincher's father wrote the screenplay before his death, and it was clearly something of a passion project for the director. That being said, Gary Oldman gives a brilliantly messy performance in the lead role, and he's joined by a number of other stars like Amanda Seyfried, Lily Collins, Charles Dance, and Tom Pelphrey. At the age of 13, Bill stood in for a sick pianist in Buddy Valentino's rehearsal band, where Harry was already playing the trumpet. During high school, Evans came in contact with 20th-century music like Stravinsky's Petrushka, which he called a "tremendous experience", and Milhaud's Suite provençale, whose bitonal language he believed "opened him to new things." Around the same time came his first exposure to jazz, when aged 12 he heard Tommy Dorsey and Harry James's bands on the radio. He later named Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert as composers whose work he often played. He soon dropped those instruments, but it is believed they later influenced his keyboard style. At the age of seven, Bill began violin lessons, and soon also flute and piccolo. He quickly developed a fluent sight-reading ability, but Leland considered Harry a better pianist. Įvans remembered Leland with affection for not insisting on a heavy technical approach, with scales and arpeggios. Bill was thought to be too young for lessons, but he began to play what he had heard during his brother's, and soon both were taking piano lessons. There, Harry began piano lessons somewhere between age 5 and 7 with local teacher Helen Leland. Given Harry Evans Sr.'s destructive character, Mary Evans often left home with her sons to go to nearby Somerville, to stay with her sister Justine and the Epps family. Bill had a brother, Harry (Harold), two years his senior, with whom he was very close. The marriage was stormy because of his father's heavy drinking, gambling, and abuse. His father was of Welsh descent and ran a golf course his mother was of Rusyn ancestry and descended from a family of coal miners. Biography Early life Įvans grew up in North Plainfield, New Jersey, the son of Harry and Mary Evans (née Soroka). Evans received 31 Grammy nominations and seven awards, and was inducted into the DownBeat Jazz Hall of Fame. Many of Evans's compositions, such as " Waltz for Debby" and " Time Remembered", have become standards, played and recorded by many artists. During the mid-1970s Bill Evans collaborated with the singer Tony Bennett on two critically acclaimed albums: The Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album (1975) and Together Again (1977). In 1966, he met bassist Eddie Gómez, with whom he worked for the next 11 years. In 1963, Evans recorded Conversations with Myself, a solo album produced with overdubbing technology. After months of seclusion, Evans reemerged with a new trio, featuring bassist Chuck Israels. However, ten days after this booking ended, LaFaro died in a car accident. In 1961, two albums were recorded at an engagement at New York's Village Vanguard jazz club, Sunday at the Village Vanguard and Waltz for Debby a complete set of the Vanguard recordings on three CDs was issued decades later. In late 1959, Evans left the Miles Davis band and began his career as a leader, with bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian, a group now regarded as a seminal modern jazz trio. In 1958, Evans joined Miles Davis's sextet, which in 1959, then immersed in modal jazz, recorded Kind of Blue, the best-selling jazz album ever. In 1955, he moved to New York City, where he worked with bandleader and theorist George Russell. His use of impressionist harmony, interpretation of traditional jazz repertoire, block chords, and trademark rhythmically independent, "singing" melodic lines continues to influence jazz pianists today.īorn in Plainfield, New Jersey, United States, he was classically trained at Southeastern Louisiana University and the Mannes School of Music, in New York City, where he majored in composition and received the Artist Diploma. We discuss the roles and features of shock/sheath structures that allow the thermosphere to temper the effects of extreme storm time energy input and explore the implication these structures may have on mesospheric NO. Coincident increases in Joule heating likely amplify the effect. We use Defense Meteorological Satellite Program particle precipitation data to show that interplanetary shocks and their ICME drivers can more than double the fluxes of precipitating particles that are known to trigger the production of thermospheric NO. The strongest events curtail the interval of neutral density increase and produce a phenomenon known as thermospheric 'overcooling'. Excess NO emissions can arrest thermospheric expansion by cooling the thermosphere during intense storms. Our study of nearly 200 events reveals that shock-led interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) are prone to early and excessive thermospheric NO production and IR emissions. The NO cooling competes with storm time thermospheric heating resulting in a thermostat effect. NO is a trace constituent in the thermosphere that acts as cooling agent via infrared (IR) emissions. As one climbs higher, the temperature drops from an average around 62☏ (17☌) to -60☏ (-51☌) at the tropopause. We present a multi-year superposed epoch study of the Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry nitric oxide (NO) emission data. Therefore, the temperature in the troposphere also decreases with height. It is 11-12 miles (18-20 km) high at the equator, 5½ miles (9 km) at 50°N and 50°S, and just under four miles (6 km) high at the poles.Īs the density of the gases in this layer decrease with height, the air becomes thinner. The troposphere begins at the Earth's surface, but the height of the troposphere varies. Known as the lower atmosphere, almost all weather occurs in this region. The transition layer at the bottom of the stratosphere is called the tropopause. As such, the location of the bottom of this layer is readily seen by the anvil-shaped tops of cumulonimbus clouds This prevents convection as there is no upward vertical movement of the gases. This increase in temperature with height means warmer air is located above cooler air. Heat is produced in the process of the formation of Ozone, and this heat is responsible for temperature increases, from an average -60☏ (-51☌) at tropopause to a maximum of about 5☏ (-15☌) at the top of the stratosphere. In this region, the temperature increases with height. This layer holds 19 percent of the atmosphere's gases but very little water vapor. The stratosphere extends from from 4 -12 miles (6-20 km) above the Earth's surface to around 31 miles (50 km). The transition boundary which separates the mesosphere from the stratosphere is called the stratopause. Both the stratosphere (next layer down) and the mesosphere are considered the middle atmosphere. The gases in the mesosphere are now thick enough to slow down meteors hurtling into the atmosphere, where they burn up, leaving fiery trails in the night sky. As such, temperatures increase as one descends, rising to about 5☏ (-15☌) near the bottom of this layer. The gases that comprise this layer continue to become denser as one descends. This layer extends from around 31 miles (50 km) above the Earth's surface to 53 miles (85 km). ![]() The bottom of the thermosphere is the mesopause - the transition into the mesosphere. Take it to the MAX! The Ionosphere: The Outer Edges of the Atmosphere The high temperature indicates the amount of the energy absorbed by the molecules, but with so few molecules in this layer, the total number would not be enough to heat our skin. However, despite the high temperature, this layer of the atmosphere would still feel very cold to our skin. From as low as -184 ☏ (-120 ☌) at the bottom of this layer, temperatures can reach as high as 3,600☏ (2,000☌) near the top. ![]() While still extremely thin, the gases of the thermosphere become increasingly denser as one descends toward the Earth.Īs such, incoming high energy ultraviolet and x-ray radiation from the sun begins to be absorbed by the molecules in this layer and causes a large temperature increase.īecause of this absorption, the temperature increases with height. Thermosphereīetween about 53 miles (85 km) and 375 miles (600 km) lies the thermosphere, known as the upper atmosphere. ![]() At the bottom of the exosphere is a transition layer called the thermopause. In this layer, atoms and molecules escape into space and satellites orbit the earth. It extends from about 375 miles (600 km) to 6,200 miles (10,000 km) above the earth. This is the outermost layer of the atmosphere.
